Hello everyone
I know it's been awhile but it's time for a review. Today I'm going to the WWE Classics on Demand channel to take a look at Summerslam 1993.
I wanted to do this for a couple of reasons. This PPV brings back fond memories since I believe this is the 2nd pay per view I've ever saw and the first pay per view I saw in its entireity. the first was King of the Ring of that year.
I know lots of people trash the early 90's but as a kid at that time I liked everything. I think people forget that back then was a totally different time. People decide to critique things on how they feel about them at their current age (which would be a 16 year difference). I've always been a fan of gimmicks and feel ultimately that is what makes me feel wrestling is so special compared to sports and makes me keep watching to this day.
Wrestling has and always will have a strange cast of characters that most people probably do not understand how anyone can be interested in them, but people are.
So the main event was Lex Luger and Yokozuna and the last stop of the Lex Express. I loved "I'll Be Your Hero", so absurd it's funny. Plus you have to love that Luger was CAMPAIGNING not for president, not for governor, hell, not even for mayor. He was campaigning for a World Title shot after bodyslamming (which no one else could do) Yokozuna on the USS Intrepid..... on July 4th no less. The other match is one of my favorite feuds ever and one of the longer feuds there ever was in WWE. That being Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler.
Your announcers are Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan so already this is a win. Heenan is funny and Vince McMahon is just over the top that I laugh all the time listening to him announce. "ONLY IN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION!", "1, 2, he got him...NO", "OOOOOH YEEEEAH BILLY AND BART THE SMOKING GUNNS", and all the other stuff he said. That's one thing I miss in wrestling nowadays, exciting announcers. Heenan and McMahon are 2 great examples of entertaining announcers because McMahon was over the top funny and Heenan had some great lines (didn't like them then cause I didn't heels but appreciate them now). Now, all 3 announces teams are more like "sports announcers", who I feel are the most boring, unfunny people I've ever heard. The closest thing we have to over the top announcers is Don West in TNA, who I must say is one of the more entertaining things on TNA. Out of nowhere he's like "Last night at 5:30am I was twittering Velvet". Ha.
Oh yeah..... it's review time.
Ted Dibiase vs Razor Ramon
Pretty good opener. Nothing really of note and there was no story behind it played before the match as a hype video.
Hotline plug! The Undertaker and Bret Hart talks to the fans on the phone. Undertaker talking on the phone seemed weird. I always wanted to call the hotline and talk to Bret, Razor, and Undertaker but sadly my parents wouldn't let me. Looking back it was probably a good move on their part.
Todd Pettingil (mispelled?) interviews the Steiners' mother and sister. I wonder if its their real family. I don't see why they would lie about that, but still.
Heavenly Bodies vs Steiner Brothers
Ah yes, memories of when Scott Steiner used to be talented. And I LOVED their theme song. It definitely beats Steiner's later song in WCW of just a siren sound. HEY LOOK! Tag team wrestling in the McMahon promotion that actually matters. Definitely the good old days when two teams would square off to see who the better team is. Nowadays tag teams fight one person in handicap matches and lose.
Pretty good back and forth match. Scott Steiner picks up the win with the Frankensteiner (remember that awesome move? the one he stopped doing we he got "bigger")
Shawn Michaels interview with someone who I don't. I don't remember the person interviewing Shawn Michaels.
Shawn Michaels: Better Intercontinental Champion than World Champion. A quote from Intercontinental Tony that I agree with.
They show a picture of Radio WWF. I wish that were still around and I would definitely audition for it.
Shawn Michaels vs Mr. Perfect
Good match. Heel type ending. Nothing really else to note about it other than post match beatdown on Perfect by Diesel and Shawn Michaels.
IRS vs 1-2-3 Kid
This match I remember came off the heels that the Kid beat Razor Ramon and more recently beats Dibiase (on Raw? Superstars?). Will his winning streak continue?
Interview with Bruce and Owen Hart
Bret Hart vs Jerry The King Lawler
Lawler comes out and says he's injured and not able to wrestle. So it looks like the match is changed. Owen's not buying it though....neither is Vince. It's going to be Doink the Clown. The show just got even better.
Bret Hart vs Doink The Clown
Jerry lawler interferes and as Lawler and Doink leave here comes...... JACK TUNNEY! Yes! Justice will be served.
Serously though, back in the day, when the authority figure (in this case Jack Tunney) came out you knew it was a big deal. Tunney makes Lawler fight Bret Hart.
Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler
Bret Hart locks in the Sharpshooter and refuses to let go. Hart badly beats up Lawler. It's pretty amazing that 9 people cannot move Bret Hart. It's not like Bret Hart is Yokozuna or Giant Gonzalez size.
A great story and very logical. I wish WWE nowadays would learn from this as the right way to continue a feud with both people looking good. And not carrying on the feud for no good reason.
I'd like to take this time to look at this story.
Bret Hart wants revenge on Lawler. Lawler plays the cowardly heel and fakes an injury so he's going to make Hart fight a replacement. So Bret fights the replacement and since Hart was in a match he's weakened, therefore Lawler takes advantage and after the match attacks Hart. he goes to leave but since he was contractually obligated to fight Hart, and now proven that he's not injured, he must get back in the ring.
So the actual match starts with Bret at a big disadvantage. Harts wins with the sharpshooter but because he's so pissed he won't let go. All the officials tried to stop him and he would not release the hold. therefore the referee DQed Hart for defying authority, even though Lawler has tortured Hart and his family.
So Bret Hart gets the beating on Lawler but Lawler gets the win, which is all you need the heel to do to brag for the next couple of months. Worse yet, Lawler gets to be called "the Undisputed King".
Right there, that's a reason for Bret to want revenge even more because now Lawler can and probably will brag that he has a "clean win" over Bret Hart. Neither guy in my opinion looked bad and the feud can continue and I can buy into the fact the feud continues.
Looking at wrestling today. Triple H defeats Randy Orton at Wrestlemania 25, so of course since Orton has been taking out the McMahons he gets another title shot..... for no reason other than WWE seems fit to carry fueds for no good reason. Not to mention the belt would be put on the line in a 6 man tag (one of the worst ways to put up a title).
In all Hart vs Lawler was a good way to book things in my opinion. Rarely nowadays do I give I Raw credit for booking something interesting.
And now to continue the review.
Ludvig Borga (remember him?) makes fun of Luger and America. Apparently he's going to show us and Marty Jannetty (?) what Ludvig Borga is all about.
Ludvig Borga vs Marty Jannetty
Talk about a cool down match. Lawler and Hart was awesome and this.... well..... not so much.
Vince needs to stop trying to convince me Jannetty has a shot. Even as a kid I didn't think he did.
Giant Gonzalez vs The Undertaker
It was pretty boring, which was to be expected. Paul Bearer regains the urn. Speaking of the urn. Does anyone know the last time the urn was used on WWE TV? I think it was when Bearer turned on Undertaker and joined Mankind but I could be wrong.
The Smoking Gunns and Tatanka (Buffalo!) vs Bam Bam Bigelow and The Headshrinkers
Good six man and I always liked the Smoking Gunns and Tatanka, especially the war dance. Got stopped in this match though.
interview with the bus driver of the Lex Express. riveting stuff.
Japanese national anthem is sung by someone who sounds just awful, which may have been the point.
Macho Man comes down to the ring accompanied by Aaron Neville.
Lex Luger vs Yokozuna
Not a great match but decent enough. The ending of Luger celebrating didn't make much sense since he didn't win the title. As it was, Luger would not get a rematch until Wrestlemania until he won the Royal Rumble, which is good because as mentioned earlier, it would make no sense for him to get another title shot. He should have to work his way back up, which he did by winning the Royal rumble (co winning to be exact)
I enjoyed the show, which I figured I would. Definitely much better than any Raw in today's wrestling. Well that's all. Have a great morning, afternoon, or night, whatever time of the day it is for you.
