Welocme to another edition of the No Punches Pulled interview series. In this edition, one half of the NYWC tag team champions Rex Lawless.
RL: Were you a wrestling fan growing up?
Rex: Yep huge fan growing up. Grew up during the Monday night wars, when everyone was watching. It was all we would talk about at school. Everyone wore wrestling shirts. I was more of a fan of WCW & the cruiserweights. Rey Mysterio Jr. & Chris Jericho were my favorites.
RL: When did you decide "I'm going to be a wrestler"?
Rex: I already knew I wanted to be a wrestler when I grew up at eight years old. I joined my middle school wrestling team with the goal in mind to learn more about the sport with the intent to one day switch to pro wrestling. I goot side tracked in my high school years when another love of mine took over music. I played in bands which got me used to performing in front of crowds. When I saw music most likely wouldn't pan out, I decided to go back and give my old dream a shot and started researching wrestling schools.
RL: How did you discover the NYWC academy?
Rex: Before I joined a wrestling school, I wanted to get in shape. I joined a nearby Gold's Gym. I heard WWE wrestler Zack Ryder went to this gym as well. I finally worked up the courage one day to ask him where he trained. He told me NYWC. From there on whenever I saw him he shook my hand asking me how things were going. He told me I have the size and I could do it which inspired me even more. I went down to the school signed up and started training in 2008-9ish I believe.
RL: What were your initial impressions of Mikey Whipwreck?
Rex: Didn't talk to him much in the beginning. Always just tried to be respectful. I knew who he was from ECW of course. Watched him wrestle Mega at the first NYWC show I attended and remember thinking all these guys were larger than life. Little did I know later on we would become friends.
RL: How tough was training?
Rex: Wrestling training is very tough. I wasn't a natural to say the least either. I knew no matter what I wasn't going to quit. This is what I wanted to do. You have to love it or you won't last.
RL: What are your memories of debuting at the Joker's Wild battle royal at the 2010 Psycho Circus?
Rex: I remember getting eliminated by All Money Is Legal off the top rope to the floor and slamming my heel hard on the floor. When I got to the back Mikey asked if I was ok. I said yeah I was fine. My heel killed me for over a week.
RL: What are your memories of joining Order Of The Black?
Rex: I remember Shane pitching the angle to me and being so excited to finally getting on the shows. And the fact it was in a main storyline was all the better. I also remember kicking Azrieal in the head really hard on my debut run in...Sorry Az.
