Before I start this I just want to let everyone know I approved this with the moderator as I wasn't sure if this section was just for indy reviews.
THE FOLLOWING INTERACTIVE DVD/VHS REVIEW IS OPINIONATED AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS FACT.
I AM NOT CONSIDERED A PROFESSIONAL WRITER, NOR WOULD I EVER CONSIDER MYSELF ONE SO THE WRITING TECHNIQUE IS ONE AS IF I WERE TALKING TO EVERYONE ON THE AIR DURING THE WEEKLY SUNSET FLIP WRESTLING SHOW.
REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS WRITTEN ABOUT ANYONE, I RESPECT PRO WRESTLERS AS A WHOLE FOR PUTTING THEIR BODIES ON THE LINE FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT.
Hi everyone,
Welcome to the first Interactive DVD/VHS Review blog exclusive to myspace. From here on on I would like to do one of these each week, sometimes twice a week, and let me know your opinions on the DVD that we will be discussing.
It's time for the first Interactive DVD/VHS Review, done exclusively on the Sunset Flip Wrestling Show myspace (www.myspace.com/sunsetflipshow) and the NYWC board. Twice a week I write about a DVD that I have from either WWE, TNA, ROH. I received a big lot of DVD's about a year ago so it's time to put them to good use.
This time we take a look at WWE Summerslam 2005.
Summerslam 2005
August 21, 2005
Washington DC
WWE Championship
John Cena vs Chris Jericho
World Heavyweight Championship
Batista vs JBL
First Time Ever: Legend vs Icon
Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels
Ladder Match for the custody of Dominick
Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
Matt Hardy vs Edge
Us Championship
Orlando Jordan vs Chris Benoit
The Undertaker vs Randy Orton
Eugene vs Kurt Angle
Thoughts before watching DVD: In my opinion a very strong card minus Kurt Angle vs Eugene and Batista vs JBL. I've always enjoyed the feud with Randy Orton and The Undertaker and of course Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels is memorable but not for the reason you may think. It should be noted most of these DVD's/VHS's I haven't seen in years so it's like I'm watching it all over again. The main storyline I remember is Shawn Michaels turning on Hulk Hogan out of nowhere and being the bad guy for this match. I was truly shocked with that moment. Unfortunately, there are not many times after that I am shocked with something in pro wrestling. Or at least shocked in a good way.
US Championship
Chris Benoit vs Orlando Jordan
I have the actual Summerslam 2005 DVD. I feel a bit special because I know a big Summerslam disc set is out and I wouldn't be surprised if this match was not included in the huge box set because.... well you know why. Just as I typed this Chris Benoit already won the belt in record time. No wonder why Orlando Jordan really didn't go anywhere in WWE. It was pretty funny but too short to be considered if it was good or bad.
It is really weird seeing Vickie Guerrero with Eddie for the backstage segment and someday realize she will be one of the most hated people in World Wrestling Entertainment by the fans. I was hoping for an "EXCUSE ME" but I guess that probably did not even cross her mind back then.
Edge vs Matt Hardy
The buildup was great. I remember being at MSG with some friends during the Lita/Trish segment, not caring about either of them (like I ever have before) and chanting "We Want Matt We Want Matt". Most people, inlcuding myself, figured Matt would be going to TNA but he shocked everyone returning backstage attacking Edge at a Raw. I liked both guys, still do today, but I still hate Edge's song. Everyone that listens to the show knows how much I hate most of the "3 Door Hoobaback" bands WWE uses and how almost no songs actually fit their characters unlike in the past. Edge's song is a good example but I guess it's better than "Never Gonna Stop".
This match should just have been called "The Beatdown of Matt Hardy". if you like Matt Hardy getting hurt and bloodied up, this match is for you. If you want a competitive match, this match is not for you. I recall when watching this the first time my first thought was "looks like he should have went to TNA".
Ladder Match for Custody of Dominick
Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio
"Is it true Dad, is it really true"-Dominick, after Eddie Guerrero tells Domonick that Eddie is really his father, not Rey Mysterio.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this storyline. Most people think it's stupid. I kind of agree. But I also think it's so stupid it's funny. Not so stupid it's stupid (like Triple H invading Randy Orton's "house"). I love gimmicks like Doink the Clown and Duke the Dumpster Droese. A ladder match for the costudy of a child? This is the stuff I live for in pro wrestling. Not to mention I like the work of Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero and now I'm in a minority that likes Rey Mysterio as a whole.
From a match quality standpoint, this match saved the show. My favorite spot of the night was Domonick coming in and trying to move the ladder and quite frankly not doing anything to it. I laughed.
Eugene vs Kurt Angle
I have always said that for some reason, to me, Christy Hemme looked alot better and more attractive to me when she went to TNA. This PPV does not change that opinion. I honestly don't know what it is but to me she just does.
The fans hate Eugene? That saddens me. Where are they anyway? Washington DC? What kind of dumb wrestler do those people cheer for that is from Washington DC? Oh.... right.
Nothing great, but nothing terrible either from this match except the fans. Eugene is a pretty lovable character so I don't get it. I would understand if it was Hammerstein and an old school ECW crowd.
Divas wash a car. I miss when they had Divas dress skimpy. They were used much better than they are used now. Now all they do is botch up all the time in matches. I also miss old Maria. She used to be one of my favorite divas when she was stupid interview girl. I found it highly entertaining when she called Edge "The Edge". Mr. McMahon wants to be president.
Undertaker vs Randy Orton
I always felt these two worked well together. Pretty good match. nothing special in my opinion though.
John Cena vs Chris Jericho
Nothing note worthy here. Crowd was 50/50 as this was the time where people started booing Cena. Decent match.
JBL vs Batista
This match scares the shit out of me. Everyone knows how I feel about Batista in he's slow and boring and he even failed to deliver a good match.....AGAINST SHAWN MICHAELS! However if he works with the right person usually it's not that bad. JBL is not that person. JBL, one of the worst drawing champions in history, does not have the skills to pull good matches out of people. He is great on the mic, but not as an announcer. The build up looked boring. On the plus side it's a No Holds Barred Match and those matches take less wrestling skill.
I'm glad Batista kicked out of JBL's clothesline as I will never EVER EVER buy a clothesline as a finisher unless it's wraped in barbed wire or something like that.
Not as bad as I thought it would be, and definitely not exciting but it could have been slower and worse.
Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels
Great buildup and I was shocked when HBK turned on Hogan. This was pretty big at the time.
Let's face it, the big story in this match was the ridiculous overselling of Shawn Michaels for Hulk Hogan's moves. ESPECIALLY the big boot which is just hysterical.
Now, unlike most reviews I'm not going to tell you whether you should get it or not, I think the Sunset flip readers are smart enough to make decisions themselves.
There's a great ladder match, some decent matches, and some matches that makes you wonder why they are on the PPV (Benoit-Jordan). There is a plus as there was no women's match on the show. However, there were also no tag team matches so if you're a tag team wrestling fan this is probably not for you. Also, there was no cruiserweight match.
So let me know what you think. Do you agree? Did you enjoy it more than me? Do you think I was being generous? reply back and don't forget to download the latest show at sunsetflipwrestling.podomatic.com and support your favorite wrestler in the Summer Rumble.
